Choosing a broadband Internet service provider can be a daunting task. If you are not familiar with the terminology involved then even just choosing a technology is tough. The two major services our there are Cable Internet and DSL.

Cable service providers us the same coaxial cables that bring television to your TV set to also bring you broadband Internet access. Most cable modems are an extra box you plug into both your computer and your cable outlet. This lets a user watch TV and surf the Internet at the same time. And, like with DSL service, you have instant Internet access just by turning on your PC.

The annual Cable, Satellite, TV and Broadcasting (CSTB) trade show held most recently in February 2007, in Moscow, clearly demonstrated another trend – further convergence of telecoms and media. During the past few years these markets grew incredibly. For example, according to IKS magazine, in 2005 the total volume of M&A transactions on the cable TV market exceeded USD 100 million. Three major players in this market segment are Sistema Mass Media, NAFTA-Moscow and Columbus Nova .
